Apples Top the "Dirty Dozen" List of Most Pesticide-Contaminated Produce

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, as long as it's organic. Otherwise, you could be setting yourself up for more trips to the doctor's office.

That's because 98 percent of conventionally grown apples were found to be contaminated with pesticides, according to a new study released by the Environmental Working Group on Monday. And that was AFTER they had been washed.

That puts apples right at the top of their "Dirty Dozen" list of produce that consumers should buy organic whenever possible.

“Though buying organic is always the best choice, we know that sometimes people do not have access to that produce or cannot afford it,” said EWG President Ken Cook. “Our guide helps consumers concerned about pesticides to make better choices among conventional produce, and lets them know which fruits and vegetables they may want to buy organic.”

This was the seventh year in a row that EWG analyzed 53 fruits and vegetables and found many containing pesticides even after they were washed and peeled.

The 12 with the highest contamination levels get the dubious honor of landing on the "Dirty Dozen" list. Those with the lowest concentrations of pesticides make the "Clean 15" list.

Among the other notable findings this year:

Herb cilantro makes an appearance for the first time. EWG found 33 unapproved pesticides on nearly half of all the cilantro samples tested, the highest percentage of unapproved pesticides on any item tested since the EWG started tracking data in 1995.

Cherries dropped off the dirty dozen list, but lettuce found its way back on.

Pesticides are associated with a host of health problems in humans, including neurological deficits, ADHD, endocrine system disruption, and cancer.

The EWG estimates that consumers who choose five servings of fruits and vegetables from the Clean 15 list rather than the Dirty Dozen list can reduce their consumption of pesticides by 92 percent.

黑木耳是经过科学实验证明能降低血粘度。

黑木耳特别好，它可以降血粘度，上面讲的大款，血粘度太高，他吃黑木耳正好。黑木耳吃后，血液变稀释，不容易得脑血栓，也不容易得冠心病。

现在很多老年人痴呆，其实这个痴呆也半身不遂有什么不一样呢？半身不遂是突然一根大血管堵了，突然堵，半身不遂，破了就脑出血；细小的毛细管慢慢地堵塞，最后脑子不行了，傻了，记忆没有了，这种情况大多数是因为血粘度太高造成的。
吃黑木耳正好，一天5克至10克，相当于一斤黑木耳吃50天至100天，一天一次吃一点，做汤做菜都可吃。怎么发现黑木耳好呢？美国医生的偶然发现。一天看病，病人是美籍华人，医生问：“你怎么搞的，是不是药吃多了？”他说：“没有啊。”“可你的血粘度明显下降，你肯定药吃多了！”他说：“我肯定药没多吃。”“那就怪了。你最近吃过什么吗？”他说：“我前天到过加拿大中国城吃了顿饭，木樨肉，有肉片、鸡蛋还有黑木耳。”美国医生一想，肉片没用，鸡蛋更没用，恐怕是你们中国人爱吃的那种很怪的东西，不信你再去一趟试试看。嗳，再去一次，果然见效了，一看行了。最后他研究发现，原来是中国的黑木耳降低血粘度。文章一发表后，台湾香港到处都用这个办法。后来我们北京心肺中心专门研究了黑木耳。兔子、耗子用了也能降低血粘度。后来有一次我为病人看病，碰到一个台湾企业家，很有钱，这个人得了冠心病，血管都堵了，要到美国做心脏搭桥手术。到美国一看，医生说：“不行，现在排得满满的，你一个半月以后再来，我跟你排一下。”一个半月他再去，一做冠状动脉造影，三个血管通了，你没有病，血管全通了，不用搭桥，你回去吧。唉！你怎么治的怎么搞的？
病人说，只用了一个偏方：10克黑木耳，1两瘦肉，3片姜，5枚大枣，6碗水，文火煲，煲成2碗水，给点味精，给点盐，每天吃一回，45天，脑血栓都化了。这是他告诉我的一个偏方，虽然我没有看他的片子和病历，但他这个事说得很认真。
总之，黑木耳是经过科学实验证明能降低血粘度，每天黑木耳5克至10克就行了。

Why is there such confusion in food PH values? It's because there are 2 different ways to measure it. One way is to measure a food's PH value before we eat it. The second way is to measure a food's PH value after we eat it. There are websites that contain each of these values. And these values are NOT the same- they are totally different. That's where part of the confusion comes into play. In this web page I deal with a food's PH value after we eat it. The food industry term for this is PH FORMING foods. For instance, the PH value for an orange before we eat it is acidic, however, after we eat it- it turns alkaline in our body.

PH in chemistry stands for "potential of hydrogen." What is that? It's the measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. It is measured on a scale of 0 to 14 with 14 being the most alkaline, while 0 is the most acidic. Water is neutral and our blood is mostly water. God created our blood to have a PH of 7.0 which is neutral. The goal for each person should be to eat the right kinds of foods to maintain a healthy pH of 7.4 or higher of their blood.

30+ members of CETDEM joined the trip and visited 7 Organic Vegetable farms & GAP LIFE LIGHT Strawberry farm.

It is very beneficial for the group to see what farmers use on their soil/crop which indirectly affect our health when we consume their produce. The group have gained better idea who's produce is safe for consumption. The visit also serve as a platform for two way communication between farmer & consumer. It also earns our respect to the hard work the farmer committed & contributed to our community.

The group had a wonderful time in EQ Strawberry farms tasting delicious and safe to consume strawberry. We also gain some knowledge on how to grow quality strawberry with LIFE LIGHT & KIKUCHI LIGHT.

Willie Smits works at the complicated intersection of humankind, the animal world and our green planet. In his early work as a forester in Indonesia, he came to a deep understanding of that triple relationship, as he watched the growing population of Sulawesi move into (or burn for fuel) forests that are home to the orangutan. These intelligent animals were being killed for food, traded as pets or simply failing to thrive as their forest home degraded.

Smits believes that to rebuild orangutan populations, we must first rebuild their forest habitat -- which means helping local people find options other than the short-term fix of harvesting forests to survive. His Masarang Foundation raises money and awareness to restore habitat forests around the world -- and to empower local people. In 2007, Masarang opened a palm-sugar factory that uses thermal energy to turn sugar palms (fast-growing trees that thrive in degraded soils) into sugar and even ethanol, returning cash and power to the community and, with luck, starting the cycle toward a better future for people, trees and orangs.

If you don’t see these places soon, you may miss the chance to enjoy their unique beauty.

Although the world’s greatest travel destinations may seem to endure through the ages, premier tourism sites frequently come and go. Technology, climate change (both natural and man-made), development, wars, disasters and the ever-changing tastes of vacationers constantly cause travel choices to evolve. For all these reasons and more, the following destinations are “endangered,” because they are in danger of losing what makes them so special.

1. Barrow, Alaska
Why travel to the northernmost point in the U.S.? To see the polar bears that occasionally wander off their sea-ice homes and amble through the tiny town (pop. 4,500). The Department of the Interior added polar bears to the list of threatened species in 2008 as melting sea ice diminished the bears’ ability to hunt for prey......

2. Mount Kilimanjaro : "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," described in Ernest Hemingway’s 1938 short story of the same name, may soon become history. A 2009 report published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences warned that Africa’s highest peak has lost 26 percent of its icecap just since 2000, and 85 percent of the snows that blanketed the mountain in 1912. ...

3. Appalachia : Across the southeastern U.S., mining companies are clear-cutting forests, blowing the tops off mountains to get at the coal within, and dumping the waste into nearby streams. "Mountaintop removal,” as the process is known, has already flattened nearly 500 Appalachian peaks, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.....

4. Great Barrier Reef : If ocean temperatures continue to rise, the world’s largest coral reef could lose much of what makes it so appealing to more than 1,500 species of tropical fish — and to thousands of snorkelers and scuba divers..

5. Venice, Italy : Rising sea levels and compacting soils are causing Italy’s (and perhaps the world’s) most unique city to sink slowly into the water that surrounds it on all sides.....

6. Hawaii : sure, the Aloha State may look like a tropical paradise, but more species are endangered on these islands than in the contiguous 48 states combined. “To the untrained eye, you may think you’re looking at the most beautiful, pristine forest,”.....

7. The Everglades : The so-called "River of Grass" is little more than a stream these days, thanks to encroaching farms, development and irrigation systems that suck up precious water from Lake Okeechobee...

8. Glacier National Park : What will they call this Montana park when the last of its namesake glaciers along the Going-to-the-Sun Road melts away, something the Natural Resources Defense Council says could happen as early as 2030? The park counted 150 glaciers within its boundaries a century ago, and 38 as recently as 1968, but that number has now dwindled to just 26,...

9. Galapagos Island : The Galapagos present a vexing conundrum for the environmental traveler: Should you stay away and avoid contributing to the degradation caused by overtourism, or visit now before they’re ruined?....

10. Chan Chan, Peru : Even intrepid travelers who have trekked the Inca Trail all the way to Machu Picchu may not have heard of this ancient site in northern Peru. The capital of the Chimu civilization that lasted from 850 to 1470, Chan Chan was once the largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas and the largest adobe city on the planet. At that time, rains were so infrequent that the Chimu engineered a sophisticated system of irrigation canals and wells for their drinking water. Some 600 years later, however, frequent El Niño storms have caused devastating erosion, threatening to turn the brick city back into mud.....

11. Manas National Park, India : UNESCO added Manas to its list of World Heritage Sites in Danger in 1992, but a subsequent 15-year insurgency caused India to remove most of the personnel from this national park. That opened the door to logging, illegal agriculture and poaching of endangered species; the Asian one-horned rhino suffered some of the greatest losses during the insurgency. Manas is home to some of the richest biodiversity on the planet. Indian elephants, tigers and pygmy hogs, which exist nowhere else on the planet, are just a few of the hundreds of mammals that roam this remote, 200-square-mile area....

12. Galveston, Texas : This barrier island near Houston was Texas' most thriving port in the late 19th century and home to "The Wall Street of the Southwest": a downtown commercial district rich with gorgeous cast-iron architecture. On Sept. 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike buried the city under 13 feet of seawater, threatening the structural integrity of some of its most cherished buildings....

（雪蘭莪‧烏魯音）農業部已經擬定流程，在2011年開始落實出口蔬菜品質鑒定，建議禁止沒有取得SALM優質認證的蔬菜出口到新加坡和其他國家。

為了保障人民的健康和協助農民申請SALM優質農耕認證，農業部已經加強相關部門的人力資源，以及提高部門審批申請的能力，以便更多農民可以申請和獲得SALM證書。…

新加坡農糧局去年抽樣檢查‧萬批蔬果181批不合格

（新加坡）農糧局去年抽樣檢查1萬1496批蔬菜和水果，其中有181批，達不到檢驗標準。

新加坡每年從25個國家進口約40萬噸（4億公斤）蔬菜與水果，達不到檢驗標準的，只占受檢驗的少過1.6%。農糧局發言人說，抽樣檢查的蔬果重量不一，因此說不上和不合格的確實數量。.....

（雪蘭莪•烏魯音）烏魯音菜區農鮮蔬有限公司董事主席陳來安提醒公眾，偏好深青色蔬菜可能會造成營養失調，使人體出現慢性疾病。

他說，台灣著名土壤與有機農業推廣人王鐘和博士最近訪問大馬時強調，優質葉類蔬菜的合理顏色，應該是翠綠色而不是深青色。

含氮素營養過高
“顏色過青的蔬菜，一般含氮素(N)營養過高，長期食用對人體會造成不利後果，尤其亞硝酸鹽(nitrite)是造成癌症的導因之一。”

陳來安表示，有機種植專家在台灣非常重視農民使用氮素肥料的後果，盡可能避免蔬菜的硝態營養含量過高。

他表示，氮素營養雖然是製造蛋白質的來源，但已有專家建議，病人因鈣質不足所引發的疾病，可能與服食太多氮素營養有關，而呼吁民眾多重視營養平衡，避免單一營養過量。

也是台灣屏東國立科技大學副教授王鐘和博士，是在11月7至14日之間，應馬來西亞菜農總
會的邀請，與屏大副校長梁文進一同訪問大馬。

大馬農民偏向施放氮素肥料
根據王鐘和博士在本地考察蔬菜園地之後的總結，大馬農民偏向施放氮素肥料，喜愛根據市場偏好，將蔬菜種得深深的青色，但卻忽視深青蔬菜，其實對人體不利，菜農也罔顧氮素肥料對土壤的破壞，以至大馬大部份菜園都有肥害跡象。

他說，土壤是農作物的“媽媽”，如果不能保持土壤的活性和肥力，不但農民種不出好作物，國家農業發展前景也會受到牽扯。因此，大馬蔬菜生產業要做得好，首先要解決的問題，就是搞好土壤，而不是胡亂施肥，根據市場導向種植深青色蔬菜。

According to the CDC, manure can contain pollutants such as antibiotics, pathogens, nitrates, pesticides, hormones, trace elements and heavy metals, none of them good, especially if they enter the drinking water. In May 2000 an e-coli contamination of the municipal water system of Walkerton, Ontario Canada killed seven and sickened thousands. It was traced to manure runoff....... CAFOs are said to be an efficient cost effective farming system; (if one ignores the cost to the environment, animals living in unnatural conditions, potential for pollution and possible human health concerns). They are necessary only as long as we demand large amounts of grain fed meat, dairy and eggs. If cheap food is the only priority, they meet the challenge. Most consumers happily hunt for bargains never questioning the production practices that made the bargains, bargains.......

Is the environment responsible for Mad Cow disease and its human counterpart?
...That conference is all about manganese, a heavy metal, that is essential to life and is part of the daily diet--for example, wheat, rice and tea provide the metal--but numerous studies show that environmental overexposure to it can be dangerous to the nervous system.... In short: The high doses of organophosphates that were poured on the cows' spines and poisoned the bodies decreased the amount of copper in cells. Toxic Sewage Sludge in Your Food
...The increasing use of sewage sludge as fertilizer for your food is an under-publicized and often hidden threat... scientific analysis of the poisons in sewage sludge shows it's the wrong, and dangerous, solution for U.S. farmers and communities. Unfortunately, many American farmers and gardeners are unknowingly using sludge-derived "compost," which is given away free in many cities throughout the United States....

Sewage Sludge is Being Dumped on (Non-Organic) Farms All over the US
..The stuff smelled a bit like ammonia, but the phosphorus, nitrogen and organic matter would boost yields on this 50-acre field from 140 bales of hay this year to 200, maybe 250 in 2004. It's also full of soil-enriching organic matter. And the fertilizer, all 600 tons of it, was free .... Recycling sewage sludge on fields has become the disposal method of choice for most of the 15,000 municipal waste water plants across the United States. More than 60 percent of the 5.6 million dry tons of sludge produced nationally ends up on fields - 3.4 million tons total, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.... "I couldn't operate if I had to buy commercial fertilizer," Salzar said, noting the difference would be thousands of dollars each year, his margin between profit and loss....But the report stopped short of linking land-applied sewage sludge, often called biosolids, with any specific health problems... "Nobody likes sewage sludge, just as nobody likes pollution," Richardsadded. "It's just that some people are unjustly profiting from it at the expense of everyone and everything else, especially our soils and waters.".....

Cattle feed now contains things like manure

To trim costs, many farmers add a variety of waste substances to their livestock and poultry feed-and no one is making sure they are doing so safely. Chicken manure in particular, which costs from $15 to $45 a ton in comparison with up to $125 a ton for alfalfa, is increasingly used as feed by cattle farmers despite possible health risks to consumers. .... more and more farmers are turning to chicken manure as a cheaper alternative to grains and hay..... Chicken manure often contains campylobacter and salmonella bacteria, which can cause disease in humans, as well as intestinal parasites, veterinary drug residues, and toxic heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. These bacteria and toxins are passed on to the cattle and can be cycled to humans who eat beef contaminated by feces during slaughter....

...agricultural societies, have always fed waste products to livestock. On diversified farms, pigs and chickens get lots of kitchen scraps and "culls"--produce that can't be sold. And it's worthwhile to keep cows around if you have access to pasture--cows convert a wild, low-input perennial crop (grass), which humans can't digest, into highly nutritious beef and milk.....

Our current course of climate change is worse than the worst case scenario projected by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)，with the damaging and often fatal effects already being seen through such extreme events as hurricanes，flooding，droughts and heat waves.

Even if the world reduces greenhouse gas emissions，the planet will take time to recover from the gases already in the atmosphere.

This is why it is necessary to focus on short-lived gases，namely methane. Methane traps at least ７２ times more heat than CO２，averaged over a ２０ year period. Methane's biggest source is the livestock industry，which is indeed one of the top causes of global warming that must be stopped.
